Back in Qing Dynasty, Xiling Yinshe, or Xiling Society of Seal Arts was founded in 1904 as the first academic institution of seal arts situated in Hangzhou, China. Currently as the largest academic society specialized in seal-related learnings and arts, it enjoys a great reputation at both home and abroad.

Located on the western side of the Gushan Mountain (yards away from the famous West Lake), the site consists of complex built in Ming and Qing Dynasties, boasting bounty of delicate gardens and inscriptions on precipices. It was founded by seal artists of Zhe School and Wu Changshuo was nominated as the first President of the society in 1913, with Ma Heng, Zhang Zongxiang, Sha Menghai, Zhao Puchu and Qi Gong to come. Over the years, its reputation continues to grow with connoisseurs and masters of painting, calligraphy, seal arts enrolled as members. Gatherings for academic seminars and exhibitions are conducted in spring and autumn annually.Currently as the largest academic society specializing in seal-related learnings and arts, it achieves grand accomplishments in academic research, cultural heritage preservation as well as publication and enjoys a great reputation at both home and abroad.
Now Xiling Society of Seal Arts (the site in Gushan Mountain) is listed as a national key cultural relic protection unit. And its seal art is recognized in the first batch of intangible national cultural heritage.
